Carlos Yulo brings home silver and bronze from World Championships

Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo will be adding two more pieces of hardware to an already bemedalled wall after his performance at the 2022 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, which secured him the silver medal for the men’s vault and the bronze medal for the men’s parallel bars.

After the qualification phase of the tournament, the 22-year-old progressed to four finals, also including the all-around and floor exercise, where he felt disappointed with his performance.

In the men’s all-around competition last Saturday, Yulo started off as a strong contender for a podium finish. After qualifying in third for the event, he recorded the finals-best score of 15.166 on the floor exercise—the event he is well-known for. However, he fell to 12th place after racking 11.9 on the pommel horse.

Although the Filipino Olympian’s performances in the floor exercises throughout the tournament were some of his most impressive, in the floor exercise finals, he suffered from an unexpected stumble in the early stages of his routine.

With this, he was only able to score 13.3 in the event, resulting in a seventh-place finish.

However, Carlos Yulo was able to redeem himself quickly with two medal-worthy performances the following day.

Seeking redemption

Following his gold-medal performance in the vault competition at last year’s World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, the Filipino was again able to finish on the podium for the same event. Although he was unable to defend his gold medal, he still finished with a score of 14.950, better than his 14.916 from last year.

Finally, Yulo capped off his World Championships campaign with a bronze medal in the parallel bars, with a score of 15.366. He was edged out by China’s Zou Jingyuan and Germany’s Lukas Dauser, but the bronze still marked his sixth World Championship medal.

Ultimately, Carlos Yulo’s performance at the World Championships this year has been successful, as he tallies two more medals to his overall record, and continues to represent the country (impressively, at that) on the international stage.
