And honestly, we actually kinda like it.
Fighting game fans were certainly in for a surprise as the Street Fighter 2026 trailer dropped in hotter than a fireball on a random Thursday evening. The two-minute teaser gave us a preview of what the World Warriors look like on the big screen.

Set in 1993, estranged Street Fighters Ryu (Andrew Koji) and Ken Masters (Noah Centineo) are brought back together by the mysterious Chun-li (Callina Liang) to enter the next World Warrior Tournament. But there’s more to the tournament than meets the eye and they’ll have to battle both their opponents and the demons of their past if they want to emerge victorious.
Now as far as story accuracy goes, the movie is definitely taking some liberties. Ryu and Ken have never been the type to let themselves go and Chun-li seems to be more than just an interpol agent in this movie. But then again, Street Fighter has always been very loose with their lore. And as long as it sets up for some cool character moments and fights, then it’s done its job.

Speaking of, the fights they’ve shown off in the trailer are looking both ridiculous and rather impressive. This is a world where someone can knock you 10 feet into the air with an uppercut after all. It’s great to see this movie having fun with its fights, as ‘grounded’ and ‘realistic’ would not work at all.
And that’s really where our hope for the Street Fighter movie is coming from. It’s not taking itself too seriously but it also wants to capture what fans love about the series. Street Fighter is exciting, camply, epic, weird, and hype-as-all-hell at the same time. If they can get some of that magic, then this might be a movie to look forward to this year.

Street Fighter 2026 is set to release in theaters this October 14.
