The conquered are now conquerors as the Americas’ Leviatan take down the Pacific’s Paper Rex to crown themselves as the Masters London Champions. The South American titans halted the W Train after a grueling grand finals that went the full five games.
Leviatan were always seen as underdogs ever since they rebuilt themselves around team captain Francisco “kiNgg” Aravena. Their four newest players are all young rookies, eager to prove themselves but still in need of the high pressure tempering that only pro play can offer.
The team looked very shaky at the start of the year after they finished eighth at the Americas Kickoff. But Leviatan kept their heads down, kept working hard, and it finally paid off after they finished second in Americas Stage 1 to qualify for Masters London.
When they arrived at the Copper Box Arena, Leviatan looked like they were really coming into their own. They swept the field during the Swiss Stage but hit a wall with Paper Rex during the upper bracket quarterfinals. Undeterred, the young titans kept pushing on, taking down EMEA’s Team Heretics and Team Vitality, and China’s XLG Esports and EDward Gaming to get their rematch with Paper Rex.
It’s a testament to see how much the team has grown, seeing how they played during the grand finals. The Leviatan that Paper Rex faced during the grand finals was completely different from the one they previously fought. As the set went on, both teams were showing just how equally matched they were until finally, Paper Rex weren’t able to keep up with Leviatan’s fast-paced playstyle.
Final match score of 3-2, with a final game score of 13-5, Leviatan blew out Paper Rex to become the Masters London champions.
The Power of Youth
Our predictions for Master London were completely tossed aside thanks to Leviatan. While our guess for EDG and Paper Rex mostly right, we never thought that this young team would be able to bulldoze their way to a championship.
If you didn’t believe in the power of momentum, then watching Leviatan this tournament should change your mind. Their lower bracket run was downright heroic for this relatively inexperienced squad and it’ll be interesting to see if they can keep it up in the future.
