Alas Pilipinas doubled as aces on the runway as they wore stunning creations by fashion designer Avel Bacudio.
Alas Pilipinas may be composed of the country’s finest volleyball players, but they can be just as fierce as they are on the taraflex when gracing a fashion runway.
Over the weekend, several members of the national team took center stage in the “Spike For a Cause” fundraising event and fashion show in support of the 2025 FIVB Men’s World Championship to be held this September in Manila.
Dressed in custom-made pieces by Filipino designer Avel Bacudio, Alas Pilipinas slayed it on the evening runway last June 28 at the Foro de Intramuros, wearing meticulously-crafted designs that proudly champion the beauty of Filipino craftsmanship.
“Ang tagumpay ng bawat Pilipino sa larangan ng palaro ay tagumpay din ng bawa’t Pilipino sa mundo, at kasabay din nito ang pagwagayway ng ating mga manghahabi sa iba’t ibang sulok ng ating isla, sila ang aking dahilan upang iangat ang kalidad ng ating mga manghahabi,” Avel wrote in a Facebook post celebrating the event.
Leading the group is the Alas Pilipinas Men’s team, bannered by captain Marck Espejo, setter Owa Retamar, returning opposite hitter Steven Rotter, and young talents such as Louie Ramirez and Michaelo “Buds” Buddin.
First-time Alas members in Eco Adajar and Jackson Reed also graced the runway, along with other mainstays in veteran Kim Malabunga, JP Bugaoan, Jau Umandal, and Lloyd Josafat.
Alas Men’s, though, weren’t the only stars of the night, as Alas Women’s stars Angel Canino, Bella Belen, Fifi Sharma, Julia Coronel, Thea Gagate, and Vanie Gandler also dazzled on the “Spike for a Cause” runway.
Like their men’s counterparts, the Alas Women’s members were a group of naturals on the runway, led by Gagate parading a double-breasted yellow coat paired with a classic Barong Tagalog underneath.
All in all, “Spike For a Cause” will go down as a night of Filipino excellence. On one hand, there are the Alas Pilipinas stars who stole the show on the runway, with the men’s team set to carry the flag in the Men’s World Championship a few months from now.
On the other hand, there is the collection that Avel Bacudio unveiled for this event, with each piece and its meticulous craftsmanship showcasing the rich tapestry of Filipino culture seamlessly blending in with modern-day fashion staples.
