Early 2000’s kids can finally live their dream of wielding the full power of the four elements.
If you have fond memories of Nickelodeon cartoons in the 2000’s, then you should be keeping an eye out for this Avatar: The Last Airbender fighting game. Titled Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game, it’s expected to come out later this year.
The first thing that should catch your eye is the visual and animation quality. Everything you see is hand drawn in 2D, with every animation meant to emulate the style of the original series. And boy is it impressive – not just because of the quality but also by the amount of it.
We’ve got stages, background characters, three support characters for every playable character, and the roster of playable characters themselves. There’ll be 12 playable characters at launch and when you see all of this original animation in motion, you can’t help but be in awe of the work the developers have put in this game.
Then the second thing you should notice is the gameplay. The high flying, element bending, martial arts that Avatar: The Last Airbender is known for is there in full display. But beyond that, the speed and flow of combat harkens back to older 2D fighting games and it’s 100 percent intentional.

Players will be zipping, sliding, and chucking elements at each other nonstop thanks to the “Flow System”. This makes every character’s playstyle distinct from each other, which can be further refined thanks to their three support characters. Combat in this game is as dynamic and flashy as the show, while being complex enough to encourage hours of experimentation and mastery.
So far, the game has gone through two closed Alphas and the response in each has always been glowing. Hardcore fighting game fans are happy to have a game that’s more scrappy and free flowing. Meanwhile, fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender are happy to see a game present their favorite show in such a loving and respected manner.
Honestly, it’s surprising that it took this long for an Avatar: The Last Airbender fighting game to come out. With the series’ focus on spectacular Chinese martial arts, you’d think it would be a no-brainer. But it’s better late than never and if you’re a fan of either fighting games or the series, this is something you won’t want to miss.
