Three riders. One flag. One shot at the world. By the end of two punishing days in Orani, Bataan, the mud had settled, the clocks had stopped, and only three riders remained with something far more valuable than trophies. They had earned the right to represent the Philippines after topping the CFMOTO MT Challenge Philippine Qualifiers.
This event wasn’t simply another off-road competition. It was the country’s selection process for the CFMOTO MT Challenge World Finals in Spain, where they will take on adventure and enduro riders from around the globe later this year.
Unlike a traditional race that rewards outright speed, the MT Challenge tests the complete rider. Competitors are judged on technical bike control, obstacle management, endurance, adaptability, and decision-making across demanding terrain, qualities that define the discipline of enduro riding.
Often regarded as one of motorcycling’s toughest forms of competition, enduro pushes both rider and machine through natural obstacles where simply reaching the finish can be an achievement in itself.
Getting there, however, required surviving one of the toughest weekends Philippine enduro has seen.
The opening day challenged riders with a technical 45 obstacle course aboard CFMOTO 450MTs, while one competitor took on the larger 800MT. Then the weather intervened. Heavy rain arrived nearly midway through the competition, transforming an already demanding layout into a slippery, unforgiving course where traction disappeared and even seasoned veterans found themselves fighting to stay upright.
Fourteen riders crossed the finish line, while an electronic issue sidelined the final competitor, resulting in the day’s only DNF.
If the first day rewarded precision, the second demanded resilience.
Torrential overnight rain completely transformed the trail. Stream crossings swelled into raging rivers. Rocks became slick with mud, climbs turned treacherous, and every kilometer became a battle against fatigue. Riders were forced to manage not only the terrain but also the physical and mental exhaustion that comes with hours of technical riding.
By the time the cutoff clock expired, only half of the field had completed the course.
When the dust and mud settled, three names stood above the rest: Mico Marges, Ralph Ramento, and Michael Trajano. Coming from different riding schools but sharing the same objective, the trio now forms the Philippine team that will compete in Spain this September. Guiding them is veteran enduro rider Pao Toral, one of the country’s most accomplished off-road racers, who takes on the role of team captain.
The World Finals will bring together national qualifiers from around the globe for a multi-day competition that combines technical riding challenges with real-world adventure stages. Rather than simply racing against the clock, competitors must demonstrate consistency, precision, and resilience over a variety of obstacles and terrain, making it one of the most comprehensive tests of adventure/enduro riding on the international calendar.
Preparation begins immediately. The challenge ahead is no longer a course in Bataan, but taking on the world’s best riders on unfamiliar terrain.
For the Philippine team, Spain isn’t simply another international event. It is an opportunity to measure themselves against the sport’s elite, and to prove that Filipino enduro riders belong among the best in the world.
