WWE Backlash delivered strong in-ring action while setting the stage for the next major storylines.
WWE Backlash may not have delivered earth-shattering returns or shocking betrayals, but it reminded fans how good a wrestling-focused WWE show can still be.
Standout in-ring performances and storyline progression helped the event build momentum heading into the next premium live event. With rivalries continuing, possible farewells teased, and new directions beginning to form, Backlash became another important checkpoint in WWE’s current landscape.
Rollins and Breakker put on a banger

As expected in a match involving Seth Rollins, it delivered regardless of the opponent. One of the best in the world today, Rollins once again elevated Bron Breakker and made him look like an even bigger star.
Though the interference from The Vision may not have been well received by everyone, the match itself was still brilliantly worked. This stands as one of the biggest wins of Breakker’s young career so far, while keeping Seth Rollins protected just like his WrestleMania match.
This will elevate Breakker into the main event scene, perhaps one of Reigns’ next challengers or becoming the Mr. Money in the Bank soon. As for Rollins, they also teased an upcoming matchup with Reigns on an episode of Raw, expect those two to collide during SummerSlam season.
Trick Williams retains

Though their WrestleMania match felt underwhelming, the rematch at Backlash more than made up for it, with Trick Williams being massively over with the crowd. The inevitable double turn already happened weeks ago, and it opens up exciting new directions for both stars as they enter fresh storylines with new personas. Perhaps a Money in the Bank win could be in Sami Zayn’s near future, while the newly turned babyface Trick continues building momentum through midcard title feuds.
Danhausen continues to be one of the best parts of WWE programming

There were plenty of fan theories throughout the weekend regarding Danhausen’s mystery partner. Some expected surprising returns, including Elton Prince reuniting with Kit Wilson, only for the reveal to be Minihausen instead. It was another effective way of continuing Danhausen’s mysteriously comedic and unserious character that continues to entertain fans weekly.
As for Kit Wilson and The Miz, this could either lead to another tag team title push or perhaps a singles run for Wilson moving forward. The Miz could also be put into the US title scene.
Asuka leaving soon?

The match between Iyo Sky and Asuka finally happened at Backlash after months of buildup. After the match, the two embraced in what could either be a sign of respect or perhaps a farewell tease. Recently, Kairi Sane, who was a part of the storyline, got released by the WWE, further fueling speculation.
Charlotte Flair also posted a photo of Asuka afterwards, leading many fans to wonder if this may have been The Empress’ final WWE appearance.
If this truly was Asuka’s last dance, she delivered yet another masterpiece alongside her former student Iyo Sky. Asuka once again showcased the physicality and unique style that helped shape WWE’s women’s division during her run. While the Four Horsewomen largely dominated this era, The Empress consistently stepped up whenever the division needed her most. She proved it once again at Backlash against Iyo Sky, who many already consider one of the best wrestlers in the world today.
As for Iyo Sky, a program with Becky Lynch for the Intercontinental title would be ideal, considering the match that they had recently.
Cena announces the “John Cena Classic”
WWE continues to maximize every John Cena appearance possible. The “Never Seen Seventeen” hosted WrestleMania and made another appearance at Backlash, this time announcing the “John Cena Classic,” a tournament that will crown a new champion.
With Cena still heavily involved in WWE programming, expect the company to keep using his presence to elevate upcoming talent and major storylines. This tournament will highlight some of NXT stars and underutilized main roster personnels.
Reigns and Fatu feud is far from over

Bloodline cinema has officially returned to weekly WWE television, and Roman Reigns’ first major world title feud is against Jacob Fatu. Their match was an intense fight, with Reigns ultimately retaining. Once again, Reigns showed how effective he is at elevating talent when paired with them.
The crowd cheering him after the match, despite his questionable tactics further proves the unique relationship he has with WWE audiences, though it also hints that he may slowly be heading back toward the dark side.
After the match, Fatu attacked Reigns, signaling that the feud is far from over. The Samoan Werewolf could potentially be kayfabe suspended after attacking Reigns and WWE officials, which may be their way of temporarily writing him off television. Expect the rivalry to resume once both stars are fully back on weekly programming.
What’s next?

The event focused more on in-ring work than many recent WWE shows. While Backlash may not have delivered shocking moments or massive surprises, it was arguably one of WWE’s most consistently strong shows this year.
The next event takes place on May 31, and WWE will likely treat it as an even bigger card. Roman Reigns and Jacob Fatu could continue their rivalry, while absent stars such as CM Punk, Rhea Ripley, Liv Morgan, and Penta may return for their next respective feuds. So far, the only confirmed match is Cody Rhodes vs. Gunther, a clash that most certainly will be the main event.
Expect more storyline progression, stronger rivalries, and hopefully more of the in-ring quality that made Backlash stand out.
