We’re taking a time machine back to the mysterious days of the early 2010’s.
A huge bombshell just dropped over the weekend for League of Legends fans as Riot Games accidentally let slip the existence of League Classic. Files for the new game mode found their way to Riot’s Public Beta Environment and players were quick on the draw to gather as much details as they could.
From what people were able to catch, League Classic looks and sounds exactly what you think it’ll be. It’s a snapshot of an older version of League of Legends although which version isn’t clear yet. What has been confirmed is that all of League’s old features are coming back. We’ve got the old Mastery system, the old Runes system, the old items, and even the old version of Champions.
The question of available Champions is the really hot one as supposedly League Classic will only have 60 available. League of Legends originally launched with 40 Champions with that number ballooning past 60 in just its first year. A lot of players’ old favorites will be left out if that number is to be believed but evidence suggests that there’s more details that didn’t make it into the initial leak.
Also, the old IP system, the previous in-game currency used to buy Runes and Champions, is making a return. That one’s really curious as a big negative of old League was how long it took you to earn enough IP to buy the necessary Runes and Champions to be at an even, competitive footing. We can’t imagine that they’ll ask you to grind all of that again so we’ll have to wait and see exactly how Riot plans to bring this one back.

League Classic is expected to drop sometime this year as a rotating game mode. It was supposed to be teased at this year’s MSI, but circumstances have forced Riot to drop the teaser early. For now, we eagerly await more solid details on how this blast from the past is going to be implemented.
