It’s unconventional but not unfamiliar, especially for a veteran like Bennyqt.
The big Project Next patch has had some time to cook, and we’ve seen more adventurous players like TNC’s Bennyqt benefit from the changes. Aside from the four random maps, the prevalence of Fighter heroes in the Gold Lane has really shaken up drafts. Other teams’ Gold Laners are feeling the growing pains of adjusting to the meta, but not TNC’s Frederic “Bennyqt” Gonzales.
The tougher and more brawly Fighter heroes were already creeping into the Gold Lane before the patch, but the Project Next update really tipped the scales. Long-range, glass-canon Marksmen still have a place in the meta, but teams now have more to consider in the draft.
“Yung mga Marksmen, hindi sila masyadong sufficient ngayong update kasi kailangan nila ng mga items,” said TNC’s Bennyqt. “Yung mga Fighter naman, for example si Cici and Ruby, maka-War Axe ka lang and ready to fight ka na. Tapos napapansin ko sa bagong meta is paunahan sa tempo — tempo wins games. Kaya hindi na masyado maganda yung late game heroes. Kung kaya mo idire-diretso, mananalo ka.”
MLBB has made numerous gameplay balance changes throughout the years, and this isn’t even the first time Fighters have invaded the Gold Lane. Bennyqt has experienced this firsthand and was already known to experiment with different hero picks in his earlier years.
“Sa tingin ko may huge advantage ako sa ibang Gold Laners in terms of versatility sa heroes,” added TNC’s Bennyqt. “Siguro naiintindihan ko ano yung role ko kung ito yung hero ko. Kailangan mo ibahin yung mindset mo kung Marksman ka, kung Mage ka, kung Fighter ka.”
Tips for the New Meta
Meta shifts can often be a big headache for both pro and regular players, as it often involves having to change or relearn what you know about the game. To that end, Bennyqt has a few tips for those looking to give Fighters in the Gold Lane a try. The first being tied to what he mentioned about changing your mindset depending on the hero you’re using.
“Pag Marksman ka, pinaka-mindset mo is makapag-farm ka ng ok,” said TNC’s Bennyqt. “Sa Fighter, pagnakuha mo na yung first item mo, iniisip mo paano ka magiging useful sa team. Kailangan mo tulungan mag-snowball yung team.”
The point about helping your team snowball as a Fighter is critical, according to Bennyqt. You hit your powerspike earlier than Marksmen. Therefore, you need to first identify that power spike and then find ways to leverage that power to the benefit of your team.
“For example, si Cici, kailangan niya ng Waraxe, si Bane, kailangan ng Holy Crystal,” continued TNC’s Bennyqt. “Tapos isipin niyo paano magiging useful yung bawat spells, yung bawat ultimate niyo kasi yun yung pinaka-binabayaran ng Fighter. Hindi lang basic attack ang ambag mo tulad ng mga Marksman.”
