Mortal Kombat II, the much-awaited sequel to the 2021 film based on the iconic video game, finally hits theaters in the Philippines.
When word first got out that Warner Brothers-Discovery was working on Mortal Kombat II, the main question on fans’ minds was whether the sequel would finally elevate the video game’s iconic elements.
Since Mortal Kombat I focused on the characters’ origin stories, the hope was that this would set up for a much bigger storyline in MK II that would hopefully deliver longtime staples of the video game such as the tournament itself and patented character finishing moves.
The folks at Warner Bros. Discovery are confident the sequel achieved just that. More importantly, fans will finally get a chance to soak in a full theater experience after the first film ran smack into the pandemic.
“This one, we see the excitement of the fandom coming from the first one,” Bonch Santos, lead for WBD theatrical marketing, told The GAME in an exclusive interview. “Unfortunately, the first one during its release was during the pandemic. So we weren’t able to release that theatrically here in the Philippines.
“So this is our chance. So all the more, it’s important for us to have this release theatrically. And we would love for the fans to see this one because this one bears all of your favorite iconic lines. And it shows you all of the arenas available.”
Santos is confident fans of the video game and moviegoers alike will enjoy the sequel.
“For one, it’s just really iconic. You have very satisfying kills in the fatalities, she said. And I think the nostalgia of it, your favorite fatalities, your favorite characters, Kitana, Liu Kang, Kung Lao, and even Shao Kahn, for example, with his “finish him”.
“So (it’s) very satisfying. So I think that one, those are character favorites. Those are fan favorites. A lot of brutality, a lot of fatalities. A lot would shy away from getting an R-16.
But for us, we embrace it because this will really give you the satisfaction of all the kills, of all the fatalities that you are familiar with in the movies. So we hope that that’s very exciting for fans to see in action on the big screen.”
Mortal Kombat II follows a successful 2025 for Warner Bros. Discovery, and arrives in time to bridge what is shaping up to be a big 2027.
“Continuing on the momentum for us in 2025,” Santos said when asked about the importance of this film. “Originally, actually, Mortal Kombat II was supposed to release last year in 2025.
“But we feel that it deserves a summer release, summer here and also in the U.S. And so it starts the summer season in the U.S. And we wanted to continue the momentum of our success in 2025.”
The lineup for Warner Bros. Discovery for the rest of the year and next year does look impressive.
“Just for 2026 alone, after this we are releasing Supergirl, which follows of course the Superman movie of last year. We also have DC’s Clayface, another genre for DC. And we have Dune Part 3, a very exciting conclusion to the Dune trilogy of Denis Villeneuve,” Santos shared.
“So that’s just 2026. But in 2027, we also have Godzilla X-Com Supernova. So similar, at least similar in nature from this genre, action, adventure, and fantasy. We have that to look forward to. And late next year, we also have The Lord of the Rings: Hunt for Gollum.
“So just imagine all of that happening for the rest of 2026 and 2027.”
Mortal Kombat II is now showing in cinemas worldwide.
