The team is pulling out all the stops for the iconic video game series’ fourth live-action installment.

Earthrealm is in for a treat as Mortal Kombat II is shaping up to be bigger and better than its 2021 predecessor. Action star Johnny Cage (Karl Urban) joins the champions of Earthrealm in a no-holds barred, gory battle to defeat the dark rule of Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford).

“Our north star for ‘Mortal Kombat II’ was to make sure we outdid the first movie,” said producer Todd Garner. “We learned from the fans and the audiences – and in this, I believe we outdid the first in every respect.”

When it comes to adapting other media into movies, the process is very tricky. Essences of the original are often misunderstood, removed, or lost in translation. Fortunately, Mortal Kombat II won’t have to worry about that problem, especially when the ones working on it are big fans of the source material.

“When I watched the first cut, I remember geeking out as a fan, just watching everything up on the screen,” said producer and longtime Mortal Kombat fan James Wan. “I remember thinking, ‘We’re actually building out this world, bringing these characters, the story and the world to life in the biggest way.’ I couldn’t be happier, and I think the fans are really, really going to enjoy this one!”

Delivering What Fans Want

Johnny Cage in particular was a fan-favorite character that was sorely missed in the 2021 adaptation. Now that he’s back on the big screen, and played by Karl Urban no less, fans are excited to see this new take on the legendary fighting game hero.

“I’ve loved everything he’s done throughout his career,” says Director Simon McQuoid of Urban. “Johnny is a very broad character and Karl had an innate ability to take the material and put his weight behind it, whilst also understanding the comedy and pushing it out when necessary. But it’s also a very sincere, honest story of this guy who’s fallen from grace and you feel for him. That’s a really nice quality that Karl was able to bring to the role.”

“We knew we had to deliver on the two promises that were made at the end of the last movie,” said screenwriter Jeremy Slater. “The tournament is coming, and Johnny Cage will be one of the new characters joining our roster. Beyond that, I was given an extraordinary amount of creative freedom to design the most exciting and satisfying adventure possible for our fans; creating an adventure with bigger stakes, crazier fights, and even more comedy and action.”

Mortal Kombat II is the hottest blockbuster this summer and it’s arriving in cinemas and IMAX on May 6.
