One thing’s for sure, the world of Resident Evil is going to change.
Resident Evil Requiem is setting the gaming world ablaze – not just because of its expert mix of action and horror, but also for its massive lore revelations.
Considering this is the ninth of the mainline series, you’d think they’d be running out of secrets to show. But the twists and turns never seem to stop for our protagonists and here are just a few of the key things Requiem dropped on us to stew on until the next entry in the series.
Also, there’s massive spoilers up ahead so be warned.
The Truth of Elpis
We’ve known about Elpis since the earliest trailers as some sort of McGuffin that’s important to Resident Evil Requiem’s plot. The game led us to believe it was a final curse by the late Oswell Spencer, deranged leader of Umbrella. Supposedly it allowed the user to easily control human minds, a power already explored in previous games. But that was all one massive smokescreen.
It turns out that Spencer grew a conscience in his latter years. He regretted how his research on viruses opened ‘Pandora’s box,’ as it were. So his last act was to seal away his final hope, an antiviral so potent it can eliminate all virus based weapons. He named it Elpis, the Greek goddess of hope, and now it’s out in the world of Resident Evil.

Considering that every major event in the series starts with some massive viral outbreak, having a cure that just completely eliminates all that exist in the world is a big deal. The capabilities of Elpis haven’t been fully detailed yet but if it can cure something as strong as the T-virus, then it’s got to be making all present and future Resident Evil masterminds quaking in their boots. Or it could force them to be more creative, meaning more trouble for our heroes.
The Connections
The Resident Evil series has always had a host of evil companies, cabals, and cults. First introduced in Resident Evil 8, The Connections seemed to be just another shadow organization tied in this tangled web of conspiracies. However, Requiem has revealed that The Connections are right at the center of this entire mess.
A report by the FBI suggests that The Connections have a hand in every major power interested in biological weapons. They have agents in the United States government, the various splinter groups born from Umbrella’s collapse, to even the BSAA, an organization whose sole purpose is to combat the use of biological weapons. From assassinations to bio-terrorist attacks, it’s all part of their plot to control the balance of power.

While The Connections’ plans were thwarted this time, there’s no doubt they’ll be a bigger player in future games. With Elpis, our heroes can now retaliate instead of just responding to the virus-based horrors that they face. The Connections can no longer pull strings in the shadows and it’s anyone’s guess what their next move will be.
Leon’s Tied the Knot
What might be the biggest bombshell in Resident Evil Requiem however is the fact that everyone’s favorite horror action hero, Mr. Leon S. Kennedy, is now a married man.
It’s a real blink and you’ll miss it moment but you can see it in the last cutscene of the game. As Leon is taking off his gloves and walking away, he seems to be fidgeting with something with his hands. His back is turned to the camera so you can’t see what it is but the smoking gun is in the bonus content of the game. There’s various concept art of Leon in there, with one showing his hand with a very obvious wedding band.

Leon has always claimed that he has bad luck with women but he can’t help but always be paired up with one on his misadventures. Now the question is which one finally managed to reign him in?
