Why the League Classic Reveal Doesn’t Feel so ‘Classic’

By Ramon Domingo - July 17, 2026

League Classic is a mix of a lot of things and it’s yet to find that right balance.

There’s been a lot of reactions and opinions since League Classic was fully revealed at MSI 2026 — mostly a mixture of excitement, nostalgia, and some dooming. While the showmatch between old legends was entertaining in its own right, the big draw was getting our first look at what League Classic would be like.

The first thing we see is that we’re playing on the old Summoner’s Rift map. That should be an instant wave of nostalgia for anyone who’s been around in the early days. But then the nostalgia came to a screeching halt once we saw the mixture of modern and old champion visuals.

This is the heart of both the curiosity and disappointment players have with League Classic. A recent Dev Update from Riot Games went into detail about their plans and philosophy for the anticipated game mode. Their belief is that League Classic means something different for everybody. So rather than locking it to just one version of the game, Riot decided to make a ‘greatest hits’ version of the game which draws on various elements of League of Legend’s older history.

One one hand, Riot’s logic here is sound. There is no definitive classic era of League but people remember mechanics and gameplay more than patch histories. Even though it’s not an exact replica of a specific version of League of Legends, as long as it feels like old League, then that should do well enough as League Classic.

Why Do Players Feel League Classic Looks Disjointed?

Unfortunately, right now the vision of the game mode feels more disjointed rather than cohesive. Players have gotten the chance to test League Classic on the game’s Public Beta Environment and reactions have been scathing. Players have called into question why certain versions of old champions were picked over others and criticized the inclusion of some modern League elements.

The biggest complaint however revolves around how they’re treating their older, reworked champions. First, they decided to put the old, janky, yet beloved classic skins of these champions behind a battle pass. This means that for champions like Sion and Nunu, who’ve gone through significant gameplay and visual changes, you’re playing them with their modern look while using their old gameplay kit. What’s more is that you don’t even get the champion’s old voice lines with the classic skins so you don’t even get the full classic experience.

The other point is that they’re allowing modern skins to be playable in League Classic. This creates a massive visual whiplash where you see these sleek and smoother skins running around in this relic of a map made in the early 2010s. It’s jarring to say the least and completely ruins the goal of bringing back that sense of nostalgia.

To their credit, Riot has responded quickly to these criticisms and seems to be making good on their promise of building League Classic with its community. There’s still time before the game mode launches on July 29. But it seems like they have a lot of work to do and will still have more work to do in the future if they want League Classic to genuinely feel Classic.

League Classic uses the original Summoner’s Rift map from League of Legends’ early history, though Riot Games has also incorporated some modern gameplay elements like Baron-empowered minions, drawing criticism for inconsistency.

Riot Games placed classic skins for reworked champions like Sion and Nunu behind a battle pass, meaning players without it see modern champion visuals paired with old gameplay kits, and even classic skin owners don’t get the original voice lines.

League Classic is scheduled to launch on July 29. Riot Games has said it is continuing to gather community feedback from the Public Beta Environment testing period before the mode’s full release.

Riot Games has said League Classic isn’t meant to replicate one specific past version of the game, but rather to be a “greatest hits” blend of elements from League of Legends’ history, based on the belief that players remember mechanics more than exact patch versions.
