We’re almost halfway through the year but there’s still so many games to look forward to.

Sony’s second State of Play of the year just concluded and boy was it a chunky one with some big titles really showing off what they’ve got.

It was over an hour long, feature length show but we’ve identified the five standout games that really made us excited this State of Play.

Marvel’s Wolverine

Sony really started off with a bang as they finally revealed our first real look into one of the most anticipated action games of the year. Developer Insomniac Games really understand Marvel’s super heroes and this trailer proves why.

Fast, violent, and bloody – everything that Wolverine fans want can be seen in the State of Play trailer. Taking place in Insomniac’s version of the Marvel universe, we’ll get to see Logan fight for mutantkind and the bloody consequences that follow that path. And we won’t have to wait very long as Marvel’s Wolverine is set to launch this September 15.

Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls – Knights of Doom

Keeping up with the Marvel momentum, ARC SYSTEM WORKS revealed the latest team in their upcoming fighting game. Fans have been eagerly waiting to see what kind of posse Doctor Doom will be rolling with and that wait is finally over.

Unsurprisingly, Doctor Doom is heading Marvel Tokon’s villains team with the aptly named Knights of Doom. Heavy hitters Magneto, Green Goblin, and Carnage join the Latverian Sovereign to win the Champion of the Universe’s tournament and maybe squash some bugs along the way. We can’t wait for the game’s August 6 launch and we still have one more team left to reveal.

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis

It’s been over 10 years since the second reboot of this iconic franchise but finally we see signs of life from it once again. Tomb Raider: Legend of Atlantis looks like it’s going back to the series’ roots. Lara Croft is back with her old getup, gear, and confident swagger as she searches for ancient and lost secrets.

Developer Crystal Dynamics seems to finally have shed the grisly grittiness of the 2013 reboot trilogy and are happy to embrace the adventurous and rather campy tone that Tomb Raider is known for. The game is still a ways away – February 12, 2027, specifically – but we’ll be keeping an eye on this one.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword

Speaking of old franchises, this State of Play has given a better look on Capcom’s latest reboot. The Onimusha series has remained dormant for 20 years but it looks like it’s coming back in a big way later this September 25.

Onimusha was a premier action-adventure series back then, but the genre is much different now compared to 20 years ago. Can this old franchise find its place in modern gaming? Fortunately you can try it for yourself with their free demo out today.

God of War Laufey

Turns out that the next entry of Santa Monica Studio’s God of War series is coming sooner than expected. Dropping in at the end of the State of Play with a whopping 20 minute reveal trailer, God of War Laufey tells another side of Kratos’ journey through the eyes of someone very near and dear to him.

As Laufey, the deceased warrior wife of Kratos, you’ll travel through the mysterious land of Everywhen. It’s the birthplace and endpoint of all magic, and the final destination of the gods. This entry will explore the question of ‘what happens to gods when they die?’ and we can’t wait to see what kind of answer we’ll find when the game eventually releases.
