It’s not that hard to enjoy some rural running near the urban heart of the Philippines.

Running is a popular pastime among cityfolk but more and more people are looking for running trails that takes them away from their urban environment. It’s not hard to see why. The noise and pollution of the city doesn’t make for a great running experience.

Fortunately, you don’t have to look very far to find running trails that bring the rural comfort near Metro Manila. So put your best running shoes on because we’ve got five of them right here.

University of the Philippines Academic Oval

Let’s be honest, whenever you think about an outdoor activity in a calm and rural environment within the city, this is the first place your mind goes to.

The UP campus has been the hub for outdoors and environment lovers and they’ve been fostering it for generations. You can feel a real connection to nature as you run around the oval, shaded by the century-old acacia trees. That’s why it remains as a popular spot for rest, relaxation, and is everyone’s favorite running trail.

Not that far from UP is the everpresent landmark that every QC denizen is familiar with. The Quezon Memorial Circle is an iconic spot where you can feel the weight of history. Which is not that surprising since it was originally intended to house the Congress of the Philippines.

It’s also undergone several rural development projects over the years so that it can become a safe spot for recreation. Running around the circle also doubles as a small tour through the history of Quezon City, leading you to other historical attractions.

Bonifacio Global City Greenway

Anyone who’s been to BGC knows just how hectic life can get there. As a major center of business and development, things are always moving in BGC and it has to move fast. The fact that this running trail exists among all that hustle and bustle is quite the pleasant surprise.

The Greenway is dubbed the longest urban park in Metro Manila, although calling it a park might be overselling it. It’s a literal straight path – a 1.6 km trail that links to other parks and residential areas from 31st Street to Lawton Avenue. But it’s tucked away at the corner of BGC, almost like it’s a secret spot where you can get away from the city life and take a moment to go for a runa and breath.

La Mesa Eco Park

Located at Brgy. Greater Lagro, District V, Quezon City, the La Mesa Eco Park is further away from the Metro but worth the trip. It’s a joint project between the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewage System, the QC Government, and the Manila Water Company. The aim is to have an environmental haven within the city, fostering biodiversity while providing outdoor activities.

If you want a place that completely takes you away from the noise of the city, then this is it. Running here will reinvigorate you as you breathe in fresh air and take in the wonders of nature. Just make sure you reserve a visit on their website at manilawaterfoundation.org.

Laguna Lake Cycleway

This 5.58 km stretch of the Laguna Lake Highway has been sectioned off for use by cyclists and pedestrians. And while it may be called the Cycleway, that doesn’t mean this trail can’t be used for running.

While it may not be completely removed from the urban world due to it being part of a highway, nothing can really beat running next to a beautiful view of Laguna Lake by your side.
