The Importance of Running a 10-Mile Race
For serious runners, building up to running a full 42K marathon can be easier if you target this distance first.
The goal of practically all long-distance runners is to eventually run a full marathon, all 42.195 kilometers of it. To get there, they gradually increase their running distances starting from the basic 3K or 5K fun runs until they’re good enough to conquer the big one.
Sometimes, though, the leap from a 10-kilometer run to a half-marathon of 21 kilometers can be a challenge. Runners often find the more-than-double increase in distance a bit too grueling.
Enter the 10-miler, which, in metric system terms, comes out to a 16-kilometer run. It’s more challenging than a 10K but not as physically demanding as a half-marathon.
“Sweet spot talaga siya,” says Rio Dela Cruz, president of RUNRIO. “Actually, one of the reasons kaya namin siya cri-neate ‘yung 16-kilometer or 10-miler is if you finish the race, you can actually still run the next day or right after. If you run 21K, medyo laspag ka ng konti.
“If 42K, pahinga ka muna. But for 16K, if you’re preparing for your 21K, this is actually the best distance kasi dito mo ma-te-test kung ano na ‘yung fitness level mo.
Speaking at the launch of the Rexona 10-Miler Series held Thursday, Dela Cruz said he ahs a personal affinity for the 10-mile run.
“And at the same time, for me, sarap niyang itakbo ‘yung 16K. Hindi siya ganoon kasakit sa katawan after. So ma-enjoy mo talaga siya. If you’re running 10K kasi, masakit. It’s a big difference. Because you’re pushing really, really hard. If you’re running 16K, medyo a little less intense doon sa 10K pace mo. But a little faster than your 21-kilometer.”
In the Philippine running scene, though, 10-mile runs are not too popular, which is why RUNRIO in partnership with Unilever launched the Rexona 10-Miler Series last year. For 2026, the series is coming back and will feature seven races in key cities across the country.
“Kakaunti lang ‘yung mga 16K or 10-miler na races natin. So since maraming 10K, 21K, or 42K, that’s why we created the 10-miler series. Para ‘yung iba na nag-prepare for longer distances.
“And since marami tayong mga schedules, ito ‘yung I think pinakamagandang platform for them to use as their time trial. To use this as preparation for their upcoming races, and just a long run for them.”

The series kicks off on March 29 with a 10-miler at the SM Mall of Asia grounds in Pasay City. This will be followed by an April 19 run at Azuela Cove in Davao City, May 10 at Centro Mall in Cagayan de Oro, June 28 at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila, August 16 in UP Diliman in Quezon City, September 13 at Ayala Triangle Gardens in Makati, and finally November 29 at the Atria Park District in Iloilo.
All seven legs will feature 5K, 10K and 16K (10 miler) runs.
“We really want to design these races and particularly to our runners to move up all levels. ‘Yung beginners, intermediate, and advanced, they can actually participate kasi meron tayong three categories. If you are really, really serious, you can join the 16K.”
Another goal of the series is to promote local tourism.
“We really want to showcase also yung mga cities, kung ano ‘yung puede nilang ma-provide,” Dela Cruz said. “One of our objectives last year is also to promote local tourism, particularly in Metro Manila. And this year, the same, but we are going nationwide.
“So we’re hoping na ‘yung mga runners natin from Metro Manila can also go to Davao, to CDO, and to Iloilo. And of course, our runners from those cities that I mentioned, we really want them to experience also to travel to Metro Manila as we have a lot of things to offer as well.”

Frequently Asked Questions
It serves as an ideal bridge between the 10K and the half-marathon. It is challenging enough to test your fitness level without the grueling physical toll of a 21K or 42K race, allowing for quicker recovery.
Yes. Because it is shorter than a half-marathon, it is a manageable goal for intermediate runners looking to level up. With a proper training plan and gradual increases in mileage, even dedicated beginners can successfully prepare for the distance.
It provides an excellent benchmark to assess your current fitness level. If you are preparing for a half-marathon or full marathon, the 10-mile distance helps build your cardiovascular base and endurance without overwhelming your body.
Organizers often design 10-miler series to showcase different cities and local landscapes. These events encourage runners to explore new locations while participating in a race that is logistically viable in more diverse settings than longer-distance events.
Unlike a half-marathon, which can leave a runner feeling significantly fatigued (“laspag”), the 10-mile distance allows most athletes to return to their normal training or even run again shortly after the race, making it a highly sustainable fitness challenge.
