Resident Evil hasn’t had much luck on the silver screen but this one might break the mold.
Horror movie and video game fans have been abuzz ever since the teaser for the latest Resident Evil movie dropped and with good reason. As the series’ eighth try in the live-action genre, it looks like it’s going for a vastly different approach.
It’s immediately apparent that there’s a darker, more sinister tone to this version of the Resident Evil world. The tension was palpable throughout the trailer and we didn’t even get a clear shot of a zombie. In fact, we’re not even sure there’ll be traditional zombies in this movie and that’s what’s got us all intrigued.
Proven horror writer and director Zach Cregger is taking the helm for this latest adaptation. He’s also a fan of the video games, as he revealed in an interview with PlayStation.Blog. What’s key here, however, is that he’s intentionally choosing not to follow the story of the games because according to him: “It would just be kind of redundant, and ultimately, I think, disappointing.”

It’s a noble philosophy but if we recall the original series of movies written and directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, those took their own creative liberties with the universe and the results were… varied, at best. That’s not to say that we think Zach Cregger’s vision for Resident Evil will suffer the same fate. We’re actually excited for the movie because it looks different from the games. But as with any adaptation of any media to the big screen, the discourse on original tellings versus copying the source is never ending.
Zach Cregger is at least aware of this fact and wants to capture the spirit of Resident Evil in his own way. He wants to tell a story that could exist in parallel with the games, and that’s got us cautiously optimistic for this movie.
