With the whole season now concluded, how accurate were we with our forecast?

MPL PH Season 17 is in the books and now with all the games played and champion crowned, we’re taking this opportunity to look back. More specifically, to see just how well our preseason predictions lined up.

Looking Back at our MPL PH Season 17 Team Rankings
Team Liquid made history in Season 17 and there’s a strong chance they’ll do it again next season.

On the whole, MPL PH Season 17 had a lot of movement among the middle-of-the-pack teams. But, aside from one surprising result, the kings of the MPL remained the same. Team Liquid and Team Falcons finishing first and second respectively is almost expected. ONIC PH following at a close third was a pleasant surprise considering their circumstances. This top three is fairly close to our initial prediction, although we were severely off the mark with one team.

In a similar vein, Omega Esports landing at fourth was way off from our last place finish for them. It just goes to show what happens when you underestimate the underdog. Twisted Minds landing at fifth also shows how they’re still struggling with finding that next big step for improvement.

That brings us to the disappointing sixth place finish of M7 world champions Aurora Gaming. MPL PH Season 17 was a nightmare for the Northern Lights as the team was never able to find that world-championship-winning form. We, like many fans, thought this was the season where Aurora would really establish themselves as a MPL powerhouse. But it seems like they need to go back to the drawing board and prove themselves once again next season.

TNC have found themselves at the bottom again. Will they be able to bounce back?

Finally, rounding out the bottom is AP.Bren at seventh. Their pattern of moments of brilliance overshadowed by inconsistency continues. And accompanying them is TNC Pro Team, who unfortunately regressed to their top-eight team form.

In total, we got a one out of eight for our predictions but we can’t really complain. Season 17 was full of surprises and we can’t wait to see how things will shake up next season.

Preseason predictions for MPL PH Season 17 were largely off the mark for mid-table teams. The top two finishers — Team Liquid and Team Falcons — matched expectations, but teams like Omega Esports significantly outperformed their predicted standing, while Aurora Gaming fell well short of theirs.

TNC Pro Team finished eighth — last place — in MPL PH Season 17, regressing to their bottom-eight form after a period of modest improvement. Their result, alongside AP.Bren’s seventh-place finish, placed both teams at the foot of the final Season 17 standings.
